WXOU is the radio station on Oakland University’s campus. The station has won a variety of awards, including College Radio Station of the Year by The Michigan Association of Broadcasters in 2012 and 2013.
The station is open to any students that are interested in radio. The slogan of the station, ‘College for your Ears’, is shown through the wide variety of programs and music the station plays.
Located in the basement of the Oakland Center, WXOU has been on the air since 1967. The station is broadcast around Oakland County, and also to the metro Detroit area.
The station has a near full schedule, with around five to eight shows being broadcast every weekday, and an average of three to four shows on the weekends.
WXOU also throws various events for students. One such event is the WXOU Birthday Bash, which is on Wednesday, April 4. This will be the 52nd annual Birthday Bash that the radio station has thrown, and it celebrates the creation of the radio station.
My name is Patrick Sullivan, and I am currently a junior journalism major at Oakland University. The focus for my final project was the radio station on campus, WXOU, and how they run and operate. I decided to report on WXOU because while I have been interested in the radio station for a while, I had next to no clue about the inner workings of the station, and only knew that they were in the basement of the Oakland Center. I wanted this project to sate my curiosity about the station, and to inform others about what the station is.
